So, you’re about to add Vision to your cart and you wonder, “How long will it take for Vision to work?” We’re glad you asked. Here’s what to expect when you take Vision, according to scientific research.* 

Week 1: Antioxidants in circulation

Vision contains potent antioxidants which are already hard at work at week 1. One week of supplementation with astaxanthin (one of the xanthophyll carotenoids in the PIXEL Complex in Vision and a potent antioxidant) was shown to decrease oxidative stress markers and increase markers of antioxidant capacity in the blood in overweight and obese individuals in a human clinical study [1].

Week 4: Increased blood flow to the retina and support for digital eye strain

The retina—the light-sensing membrane lining the back of our eyes—is one of the most metabolically active organs in the body and requires significant levels of oxygen and nutrients to maintain normal visual function. Four weeks of astaxanthin supplementation was shown in a human clinical study to significantly increase blood flow to the retina, critical for delivering nutrients and oxygen to the eye [2]. 

In another study, astaxanthin was shown to improve the ability to refocus between near and distant objects after extensive computer use. According to the American Optometric Association, two hours of continuous screen use is adequate to cause digital eye strain (DES), also known as computer vision syndrome. One of the common symptoms of DES is accommodation (focus adjustment) related, and include blurred near or distance vision after computer use and difficulty refocusing from one distance to another [3]. In a clinical study involving individuals who used computers for four hours a day, five days a week, eye accommodation was significantly improved following four weeks of astaxanthin supplementation [4]. 

2 months: Increased levels of macular pigments in circulation and benefits to hand-eye coordination

Humans have evolved to selectively accumulate three plant carotenoids in the eye—lutein, meso-zeaxanthin, and zeaxanthin. Lutein and zeaxanthin can be found in green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale) and egg products. Meso-zeaxanthin is less commonly found in our diet and is thought to form from lutein in the body. These xanthophyll carotenoids accumulate at the central portion of the retina called the macula and are referred to as “macular pigments.” They function to protect the light-detecting cells (photoreceptors) in the retina by filtering high-energy blue light and neutralizing free radicals. They also reduce image blur and glare and improve fine detail distinction and contrast enhancement [5]. As we age, levels of these critical pigments decline [6], contributing to deterioration in eye health and visual performance. 

The PIXEL Complex in Vision includes all three macular pigments in a specific formulation, which was demonstrated to significantly increase serum levels of lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin following two months of supplementation [7]. 

In another study, 3 months of supplementation with astaxanthin (a fourth xanthophyll carotenoid in the PIXEL Complex) was shown to help combat the negative impact of extensive computer use on hand-eye coordination [8].

3 Months: More protective pigments in the macula and improved contrast sensitivity and vision in glare

Supplementation with the three macular pigments in Vision’s PIXEL Complex was shown to significantly increase macular pigment optical density (MPOD; a measure of the amount of pigment in the macula) at three months [9]. 

Along with improvements in MPOD, supplementation resulted in increased contrast sensitivity—ability to distinguish fine details and foreground versus background and a significant predictor of visual performance in the real world—and vision in glare and low-light conditions [9]. 

6 Months: Vision benefits continue to build

At six months of supplementation with the three macular pigments in Vision’s PIXEL Complex, contrast sensitivity under both normal lighting and glare conditions were shown to further increase, becoming significant across a broader range of spatial frequencies (spatial frequencies represent how coarse or fine the detail you are trying to distinguish is) [9]. Contrast sensitivity and vision in glare are critical for daily tasks like reading, writing, and driving, as well as performance-oriented activities, like golf, tennis, pickleball, basketball, cycling, snow sports, and water sports. 

1 year and beyond: Long-term macular health 

Vision continues to provide critical macular pigments and antioxidants to support long-term macular health and eye longevity [10].
